Plant Bio

Beaucarnea recurvata

With a common name is Ponytail Palm (it's actually in the Agave family and native to areas of Mexico), you can expect this plant to provide a tropical look. And it does, despite coming from deserts. It's loved for its easy-care nature and the thick trunk (which stores water), called a caudex, topped by long, narrow leaves. Outdoors in its native habitat, Ponytail Palm can get more than 20 feet tall.

Its ability to hold up to missed waterings and neglect has given Ponytail Palm a reputation for being one of the best houseplants for beginners. It tolerates low light, but truly thrives in a bright spot (within 3 to 4 feet of a large, unobstructed east- or west-facing window is ideal). It can be supplemented – or grow entirely – under artificial lights, as well. Water as the top half or so of the potting mix dries to the touch, provide average household temperatures, and average to above-average relative humidity levels (above 40 percent is optimal).

Note: This plant may have some natural degree of toxicity and may cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Additionally, exposure to the sap of this plant may cause discomfort to individuals with a sensitivity to it upon contact. Grown for ornamental purposes and not intended for human or animal consumption.
